The Perkman project was commissioned over a lengthy phone conversation with this discriminating couple. We were quickly able to find common ground in aesthetic philosophies and hopeful goals to transform this property into a unique mountain retreat . Having recently completed the restoration of an historic 1840's structure in the downtown area of Charleston, this second property was acquired to offer a restorative getaway in the ethereal mountains of North Carolina. The "house" consisted of three 1840's log cabins relocated to a common property and skillfully bridged together sharing common, newly constructed foundations and metal roofing. The task was to juxtaposition the beautifully rustic log/chinking walls and barnwood ceilings alongside more contemporary elements to satisfy the taste of the homeowners, one of whom a gifted artist whose gallery graces the Charleston area with vibrant, abstract, mixed media pieces.
The Kitchen, Powder Room, Master Bedroom and Bath Suite and Guest Suite were renovated as well as some exterior upgrades. The interior spaces were quite dim , so bringing light into the house was a big challenge.
The Kitchen offered one, small original double hung window centered above where the relocated range now lives. The new larger, insulated windows were skillfully installed in the aged structure providing a flood of beautiful light as well as blending the exterior to the interior. Close attention was also given to the LED ceiling lighting as the original ceilings were low and dark. A brightening wash applied to the original wood gave us beautiful and effective results.
The Master Bedroom Suite was also flooded with natural light with a glass wall leading to a private deck, again bringing the breathtaking mountain views in. In the Bathroom, the relationship with the mountainscape continues by introducing large shower transom. We left as much of the natural wood as possible yet found complimentary, organic looking finishes to modernize for a functional and luxurious result.
The doors leading from the Master Suite to the main living space were designed and constructed to mimic original doors elsewhere in the home. The elements of metal sprinkled through the project introduced an industrial flair that helped define the more contemporary edge. These included the front door, the custom designed "branch" island support, the handcrafted sconces and the railings.
