One of my favorite projects was this newly constructed 2016 home. The clients, both of European descent wanted to blend their different cultural styles into the aesthetic of the home but also wanted to respect the context of the home being located in the North Carolina mountains. One was an avid cook, the other a devout professional who required a very meditative and organized home office. We had many meeting to view materials and concepts keeping in mind the necessity for functional spaces. Our explorations of materials ran the full gamut from white and high gloss minimalistic to a pile of big rustic boulders. After all was finished and they were finally moving into their new home, I received from this couple the biggest compliment I have heard. They told me that I had helped them develop their taste. I thanked them and we went on with our visit, but upon thinking about that in more depth I realized that the exercise of collecting what they positively responded to and organizing in a cohesive manner really did define their taste. That statement somewhat changed my definition of the client relationship.
